Amazon Affiliates really can make money!

Written on August 15th 2007 at 1:27 pm by alex

There has been some debate on whether or not the Amazon Affiliate program can earn you a decent amount of money. I believe if you select the type of ad that fits your website, the Amazon Affiliate program can earn you a bit of extra cash. They offer many advertising options (as you will see below), and here is what one of those looks like:

Types of Advertisements
You've seen the in-text advertising system from Kontera, and the minimall from Chitika. Amazon combines the two, plus they give you a few other ways to refer your readers to Amazon products. They're "Context Links" (still in beta) replace certain words in your article with hover boxes that pop-up relevant amazon product information.

If you would rather show a banner on your website, that's fine too. You can either use "Omakase Links" which, like Google AdSense, will show relevant products based on the content of your website. This is why no blogger or website owner can have an excuse for not trying this advertising system from Amazon. You can also offer a specific product to your users with "Recommended Product Links". This can also be a very powerful system because let's say you write a book review about your favorite book ever. At the end of your review you can give your readers a link to buy that book, while you earn a commission of every sale.

It Gets Better
Let's say it's Christmas time and an as for an iPod comes up on your website! A loving mother buys the iPod for her un-deserving son. Not only that, she buys new headphones, an iTunes gift card and an iPod for herself. Because she was referred from your website originally, you earn commission on everything she purchases, not just the first iPod. The guys at ProBlogger have a fantastic story about how a similar story happened to them.

The Bottom Line
The minimum payout for publishers is $10.00 for Direct Bank Deposit or Amazon Gift Card, and $100.00 for Check, all payments are monthly. The Direct Deposit feature is fantastic, and Amazon is the only company besides Google AdSense that offers users this option. So with such a low payout rate, and the hundreds of different advertising options they give you, it shouldn't be hard to find a place on your website to get up and running, and hopefully you'll have a few more beers at the end of the month. - View comments...
